Tools to shift from surviving to thriving in your leadership journey.

When we lead in a way that’s good for our brains, we’re not just better leaders for others—we’re better leaders for ourselves.

This isn’t self-indulgent. It’s sustainable, human-centred leadership.

I encourage those I work with to find their tipping point and live in the zone of Conscious Grit—and to stock their ‘toolbox’ with models, tips, and information to stay there and thrive.

One essential set of tools? Brain-friendly leadership skills. Here are the top seven skills that will help you get into—and stay in—the zone of Conscious Grit:

Stay Regulated, Not Just Resilient

Brain-friendly leaders know how to calm their nervous system. Thriving in the zone of Conscious Grit isn’t about pushing harder—it’s about pacing yourself. Use:

  • Breathwork, body movement, or mindfulness to reset during stress
  • Regular breaks to prevent burnout

Lead Yourself with Awareness

To stay in the zone of Conscious Grit, you need to know when you’re treading water and when you’re growing.
Brain-friendly leaders:

  • Check in regularly with their thoughts, emotions, and energy
  • Reflect rather than react

Anchor to Purpose and Values

Brain-friendly leadership activates meaning and connection in the brain.
To stay in the zone of Conscious Grit:

  • Remind yourself of your “why” daily
  • Align choices with long-term purpose, not short-term pressure

Connect Before You Correct

Relational safety matters. Whether leading others or yourself, use empathy first.
You will thrive in the zone of Conscious Grit when you:

  • Forgive yourself quickly and compassionately
  • Stay connected with others, even during a challenge

Shift Inner Dialogue from Harsh to Helpful

A brain-friendly leader speaks kindly, even to themselves. This ensures they stay in the zone of Conscious Grit.

  • Notice negative self-talk and reframe it
  • Celebrate small wins to activate reward circuits in the brain

Create Thinking Space

Busy minds burn out. Those who live in the zone of Conscious Grit value and create opportunities to reflect.
Brain-friendly leaders:

  • Make space for rest and recovery
  • Give yourself permission to “do nothing”

Stay Open to Learning

To thrive in the zone of Conscious Grit is to be adaptable. Brain-friendly leaders:

  • Stay curious, not controlling
  • See feedback as data, not judgment

How did you go?

  • 13–15 ticks → You’re leading from the zone of Conscious Grit. Keep growing!
  • 9–12 ticks → You’re in the zone of Conscious Grit sometimes—refine your awareness and watch for burnout.
  • 5–8 ticks → You have grit, but it may be “Unconscious Grit”. Do you feel like you’re ‘spinning your wheels’ or ‘trying to drive a parked car’? Look for a tipping point. It’s time to reset.
  • Fewer than 5 ticks→ Consider slowing down and reconnecting with your purpose and wellbeing
