A brain-friendly way to care for your energy and wellbeing
Hi [FIRST NAME GOES HERE],
We often think of Appreciative Inquiry as something we use with teams. It helps groups uncover strengths, build momentum, and move toward possibilities rather than problems. But lately, I have been thinking about what happens when we turn this model inward.
What if we applied Appreciative Inquiry to the way we look after ourselves?
What if we approached our energy, habits, and wellbeing with the same curiosity and compassion we offer others?
This is where the brain-friendly magic begins to happen.
A Different Kind of Self-Care
When we are tired or stretched thin, the brain shifts into protection mode. We focus on what is not working. We push harder. We try to correct, fix, or force ourselves forward.
Appreciative Inquiry invites a different approach. It asks us to look at what is already working. It encourages the brain to move out of survival thinking and into possibility thinking. Just that shift can boost energy, creativity and motivation.
Here is how you can apply the classic four phases to your own well-being.
Discover what is giving you energy
Instead of asking, “Why am I so tired?” try asking:
- When do I feel most energised
- What activities restore me
- When does my brain feel clear and steady
Your nervous system responds positively to noticing what works. It gently guides you back toward behaviours that support you.
Dream about what could be possible
This is not about grand visions. It is about imagining how you would like to feel.
- Energised
- Clear-headed
- Grounded
- Steady
- Present
Your brain loves mental rehearsal. When you imagine a better state, you begin laying the groundwork for real change.
Design small, sustainable actions
This is where micro shifts matter.
- A five-minute walk
- A boundary that protects your energy
- One moment of stillness before you open your laptop
- Saying no to something that drains you
Small actions signal safety to the brain. They keep you out of overwhelm and help you build momentum gently.
Deliver the change by nurturing what works
You do not need to overhaul your life. You just need to repeat the habits that nourish you. Appreciative Inquiry teaches us that growth happens when we amplify strengths, not when we fix everything at once.
Ask yourself each week:
What worked well for me
How can I do a little more of that
Your brain thrives on positive reinforcement.
This Week’s Reflection Activity
Pause for a moment today and ask yourself:
What is one energising habit I can appreciate and build on this week
Let your answer be small. Let it be kind. Let it be something your future self will thank you for.
A Thought to Sit With
Self-care is not about fixing what is wrong. It is about appreciating what is right and expanding it gently.
When you lead yourself with compassion, clarity and curiosity, your energy becomes your greatest strength.
If you would like support in creating a more brain-friendly way to lead, live and work, you know where to find me.
