Remembering Nanny | Children's Book About Grief & Saying Goodbye

Remembering Nanny is a gentle book to help grown-ups prepare and support young children who will be attending a  funeral service

When someone special dies, children often feel confused, sad, worried, or unsure of what is happening. They may not always have the words to explain their feelings. This beautifully written story helps children understand those feelings and the ritual of preparing for and attending a funeral service in a calm, reassuring, and age-appropriate way.

The story follows Milly and Tom as they prepare for and attend their first funeral after the death of their beloved Nanny. Through warmth, honesty, and family connection, they become familiar with what they may see at a funeral, how different people express emotions, and why remembering someone special can bring comfort.

Carefully written by Gail Eaton-Briggs and beautifully illustrated by Katherine Richardson, this heartfelt book offers practical emotional support for children while helping adults begin meaningful conversations about loss, feelings and the gatherings we know as funerals

Ideal for:

  • families preparing children for a funeral
  • children navigating bereavement
  • parents and grandparents
  • counsellors and psychologists
  • schools and teachers
  • funeral homes and celebrants
  • hospital and school social workers
  • bereavement services
  • support organisations for children experiencing loss

Families searching for a children’s book about grief, a funeral book for children, or a gentle book about death for kids will find this resource comforting and helpful.

The book can be read before a funeral to help children know what to expect, or afterwards to support reflection, questions, and healing conversations.

Remembering Nanny reminds children that while life changes after loss, love and memories remain.
